Light and airy with a hint of caramel - 2006 Bodegas Leza Garcia Valdepalacios from Rioja
We drank this wine with a delicious lobster ravioli in a slightly spicy red sauce.
I grabbed this particular bottle (because sadly it was one of the only white's I had left in the wine cellar and my wife was in the mood for a white) and didn't know what to expect.
I was pleasantly surprised. The nose was clean and pure. And the smell was just as pleasant as the taste. I could taste faint traces of caramel. Not enough to really know for sure. But about as much as if you were strolling down the street and you didn't notice someone passing by who was eating/sucking a Sugar Daddy until you were many paces by them and when you turned around it was to crowded to know where it was.
And I must say this wine really accompanied the lobster ravioli quite well.
One of my favorite things about the Rioja reds is that I find them the perfect bottle to purchase at a restaurant, when you have been given the task of choosing a wine for the group and there are many different and (more frighteningly) unknown palatte's among you. A Rioja Red can taste rich and hearty for the person who likes a bold bottle of red, but not so over powering to those who like the more mellow red. The Rioja red, in general, I find to be a great bottle of wine when you don't know what everyone you're with likes.
I'll remember this Rioja white the same way. A good bottle that almost anyone can enjoy!
